its february! what? before you know it, we'll be laying on the beach. did that sound convincing?? it may not be convincing, but its true. this winter season is cruising right along and with valentines day closing in, bella and i decided to get a head start on the treats::
i should note, bella did only the side work on this one, as sugar at 300 degrees is just about as safe as using molten lava as play dough.
these gems were featured in last year's february issue of martha stewart living. we got the molds here and used the recipe from the magazine. they took some practice, and trying to fill the molds before the sugar started to harden was a bit maddening. this kind of candy making should really be left to those without children or should be taken care of long after the little people fall asleep. lots of concentration involved, and steady hands. also patience, preparation, more concentration, some quick thinking and cat-like reflexes. an aloe plant should also be on hand. but the lollipops are a different story! so so so, easy and fun. for these i just laid out some parchment and poured a little sugar down, stuck in a stick and topped with a little more sugar and done!
happy february!
