if i were being completely honest, i would title this post "the second egg", but it just doesn't have the same ring. our first official egg was laid in a nearly unreachable spot and in the mud. it was broken. apparently the first layer, buttercup, didn't want to use the comfy nesting boxes. a quick search online said we needed to "train" them. golfballs will work, but lucky for us the kids had exactly three fake egg's in their play kitchen. we put one faux egg in each of our three nesting boxes and left the ladies in the coop until lunch (they are known to lay mostly during the morning hours). and just like that::
so incredibly exciting. we've been getting one egg a day since, and always in the nesting box now. as the days get shorter, i'm not sure how many more we can expect, but we're all waiting for the day that we'll find a brown egg or a blue one. it's a great subject of debate right now. when and what color. my money is on brown.
those panda cupcakes, in honor of her ongoing panda obsession, will be the last birthday treat made for a preschool celebration. that's it. no more preschool birthdays. not sure how that is possible but there it is. time flies and ellie couldn't be happier. she is very excited to be five. happy, happy birthday ellie lu!
the rest are here! two beautiful buff orpingtons::
owen's cuckoo maran, named bean::
and two of the cutest araucana's you've ever seen::
the beige araucana is kai's and will go by chickadee, according to the majority. his choice was bobina, the female form of bob. this was quickly shot down by all siblings. luckily, being twelve, he is not terribly concerned with which chicken is named what or if said name is cute enough. so it wasn't an issue. the chicken's full name, for the record, will be chickadee bobina. and kai is satisfied. we also now have a speckled sussex named mabel. just three more to name. and one coop to finish. and then we're good!
as per owen. this was his request as he prepared to turn 10. frosting has always been too heavy on his stomach. a trait that he most definitely did not inherit from any of my dna. so, what to do for a plain cake request? i was leaning toward an ice cream cake until i remembered that i had this great castle pan. ten minutes digging in the basement later and we were on our way to a sandcastle cake::
sugar in the raw makes for perfect sand. this year the fireworks that normally follow owen's party were replaced by hurricane arthur. he blew out his candles just as it was picking up speed. only a few moments without power and a safely exciting storm, almost just as good as running around with a burning sparkler. happy birthday owie! double digits!!
hope you all had a lovely weekend. ours was filled with food and treats, egg hunts and good times. and food coloring markers, just to clarify! easter is my favorite. a candy coated gateway to summer :)
somehow i missed luma and mako's first birthday. i'm a terrible cat owner. i missed it by a lot. it was in august. luma was born in the wild and mako came with a recorded date of birth, so i decided to make them twins. and still it escaped me. we did finally celebrate though, by eating cupcakes in their likeness while they were upstairs sleeping in my closet:
which brings us to the inevitable question: what's worse? silence on the blog, or posts about cat birthday parties? you tell me.
