o had a field trip to the sandwich fish hatchery a month or so ago and was adamant about making another trip. so we gathered our quarters for the fish pellet dispensers (many a piggy bank being pillaged in the process) and headed out::
"the hawk", who is a regular at this spot, didn't make an appearance. but o was thrilled regardless and acted as our tour guide the entire time::
meanwhile, little lu made several attempts to jump in (see group shot). luckily all were thwarted.

kai has naturally become my right-hand man around here. as the oldest, i guess thats just the way it goes. but through it all, and undeniably, he is happiest when a request for help involves using my camera. big b and i gifted him a real deal digital camera for christmas this year based on his enthusiasm. definitely the right idea. although, i question the influence my blogging has on him when i peruse his memory card and find multiple shots of his favorite toys and drawings placed in various locations and lighting. i envision future girlfriends questioning why all of his photos of her are extreme close ups of her hands stirring cream into coffee or her feet while she's putting her shoes on, or worse, just the plate of food she was about to eat. at any rate, he went on a class field trip to plimoth plantation yesterday and came home with these::
seriously, the best 100 bucks we EVER spent! i am so impressed with his eye. he had no idea what i was so excited about. we got to discussing the photographs and he went through a bit of his mentality concerning when and where and why he took certain shots and skipped others. it was amazing to me. i am amazed by him. end of story!

bella's birthday weekend was extraordinary and extended! complete with a visit with her cousins from new york, beautiful weather, and near constant activity. i'm sure she is now convinced that birthday celebrations are meant to last at least four days. i'm with her, mine's next::
somehow our first little girl isn't so little anymore. which suits her just fine. she has to keep up with her brothers after all!

last year, when she was only one week old, little lu suited up for her first family outing:: low tide, opening day, oyster hunting. i had my rake in one hand, a bucket in the other and little lu bobbing along in her sling, fast asleep. this year she still got a lift::
such a beautiful day and such a delectable late afternoon::
sweet sweet!! these were beyond tender and more than delicious!

oysters on the half shell at 9:30am? why not! this weekend we made the trip out to the wellfleet oyster fest. oh yes, oyster season is upon us. and big b couldn't be more excited. sometime in the first week of november we will be down at the waters edge with our bucket and boots and then the real fun begins. no more paying $1.50 a pop! i'm sure some clamming adventures will be coming your way soon. until then, here we are, sucking some down and oyster festing it up::
the little big man is in that shot......can you find him? it took me a while myself. he and o slurped down half the oysters on our plate before i had even squeezed on the lemon juice and horseradish! true cape codders!

it is just about closing time for our favorite ice cream shop, so we had to squeeze in one last visit; our official goodbye to summer 2010.
of course i had to stock up, since they are closing their doors until next season! their big sale will be this weekend......and i will try to restrain myself::
but i'm not making any promises......my mind keeps wandering to the freezer; its been overdue for a clean out anyway right? yes, it has, my sentiments exactly! if you ever find yourself on cape cod during the summer rush you really should check this place out. here's a tip, a quart costs just 50 cents or so more than a large serving (cup or cone)! so go for the gold!!

hope you all enjoyed a lovely long weekend. we were plenty busy on this end. luckily hurricane earl skirted right past us. not that we weren't ready. big b did most of the preparations. he also did some mild grumbling, at which point i gently reminded him that when someone is throwing up on their bed and carpet in the middle of the night, who takes care of business? and so, consequently, when a hurricane is approaching, who takes.......i didn't even need to finish, he happily went back to bringing in the plants.....i think he may have even been whistling! don't get me wrong, we all chipped in. the kids were a little nervous but mostly excited. only the little big man got to see a part of the storm......which turned out to be very anticlimactic to say the least. o was disappointed in the morning to find no debris or fallen trees (or "damage" as he called it). apparently, unbeknownst to me, he had set up sticks in various locations in the yard and 8 out of 10 were still in place! he accused me of moving the other two but i assured him it was earl! he seemed mildly satisfied that at least the storm did something.
on to the long weekend! we spent some time revisiting our favorite weeping beech tree. it is over 100 years old and gives me the goosebumps. it is truly one of the most beautiful and amazing things i've ever seen. as usual with this kind of thing, capturing the full effect on film is seemingly impossible::

such a wonderful weekend. we ate up all three days. we adventured, we relaxed, we ate, played and laughed. some of us also whined, melted down and had timeouts......but mostly the other stuff!

a good friend of mine recently let me in on a secret spot; a little hidden pond about ten minutes from our house. i had no clue this place existed up until she told me about it. and i'm so so happy that she filled us in (thanks sharon!)
a few days ago we were sitting around looking for something special to do. we randomly decided to go and find this little pond and see what it was all about. twenty minutes later we were hiking around a trail, circling deeper into the woods::
the further we went, the more magical things seemed. there were loads of old growth trees looming above us, stretching their roots out along the trail.....it had been far too long since the last time we'd been walking in the woods like this!
and lo and behold, who should be the only other people there but the very same friends that shared the location of their secret spot with us! the little big man was thrilled to see his best bud and the boys got right down to business::

and now, girls weekend:
bella, little lu and i were on our own for a couple of days, as the boys packed up and went to a boat show down in new york for the weekend. we missed them dearly, but thoroughly enjoyed some full on girl time::
the color?: "siren of the sea" (pedicures coming soon). i even got some time to do my eyebrows, which were threatening to join forces in a united front.
after our spa treatments we took a walk around our town's annual village festival::
don't those look familiar? that's what i was going for. if little lu hadn't been so thirsty i would have examined these more closely to learn the tricks of the trade. but she wasn't having it and so, we headed home.
our final celebration was an over the top tea party. oh yeah, it was all good!
we wore dresses and gobbled cake. boys? what boys?

we finally made it to that "bare bones" hideaway that i mentioned this past spring. big b has been up there a couple of times, but still no running water. there is a small possibility that there could be a toilet before the winter hits. i'm keeping my fingers crossed.
we had a beautiful weekend and tied in some adventure along the way::
i rode on a ski lift for the first time in my life and almost had a coronary heart attack. i'm not good with heights people. when i stand on a chair my legs get shaky. but i'm determined to learn to snowboard this season......and big b insists that i can't climb up the mountain to do a run.
