kai has been on us about getting him out to the waves these past few weeks. the begging and pleading began around the same time as school. this past saturday morning his persistence paid off. big b dug out his vintage board and they started touching it up::
maisy chewed on her bone in encouragement. sunday morning we packed up early and headed out to the national seashore, or as i call it, the real beach. it's beautiful. we got there just in time to see one of our friends talking to a ranger. he was reporting a shark attack that had happened only moments before we pulled up! right in front of his surfboard. some poor little seal was swimming in the wrong spot. and the shark was huge. and it was a big and violent event. not that they have a reputation for using manners, but i think when it happens a few yards from your surfboard, it leaves quite an impression. and the retelling left that impression on me. first day of surfing not starting out too great. i thought, "what a perfect day for the flea market!"
the beach was promptly closed and i thought seriously for a moment about the antiques and jewelry but the boys weren't giving up so easy. we headed a bit down the road to another spot and got out. big b's rationale was that it was probably actually the safest time to go in, seeing as the shark had already eaten. that's right, probably actually. which apparently, was good enough for us::
first things first, we got down to the water and started hiking back in the direction of the attack. you know, where the waves were::
those ones were too tame and too close to shore. but i liked them. we picked our spot, got kicked out by the same ranger, waited the 30 minutes he suggested and then kai dove right in::
he was so determined. and then, so tired. and then a little cold. on the ride home he was just so happy to have actually gotten out there. he is pumped for next season and is insisting that we call him "nosedive" from here on out. it's his signature move::
he has a much better signature move planned for the days when he can stand on the board. it sounds entertaining and he's sure he can master it by the end of summer 2014. though he will remain "nosedive". by choice. even when he goes pro. the kid has dreams. dreams and a sense of humor. what more do you need?::
we miss you nosedive! (he's at a nature camp this week...first time away from home on his own...which should explain the 45 pictures in this post)
ps - owen and i spent the morning enjoying less shark-attracting activities. such as, hanging with seagulls, digging in the sand and making pompoms::
world's longest post, done and done!
